A brief History of GlamRock

Glamrock (also known as glitter rock) is a sub-genre of rock music that was at its height in the UK between 1972 and ‘75. It was typically performed by singers and musicians wearing outrageous clothes, makeup, hairstyles, and platform-soled boots. The flamboyant lyrics, costumes, and visual styles of glam performers were a theatrical blend of nostalgic references to science fiction and old movies alongside guitar-driven hard rock sounds.

Largely a British phenomenon, glamrock peaked during the mid 1970s with the most famous exponents of the movement being Marc Bolan and T.Rex, Gary Glitter, The Sweet and Slade.

Despite the fact that glamrock lasted only a few short years many of the artists went on to be enduring stars, their glamrock beginnings morphing into the next generation music genre. Others were true one hit wonders but whose songs live on and continue to inspire each generation to push back the boundaries of music and art.

Glamrock was identified by both music and fashion, each artist trying to upstage others by increasing the intensity and glamour of their outfits whilst delivering driving rock beats. The counterpoint between the muscular and aggressive music and feminine looks was both shocking and appealing to the post hippie generation.

Fashions were typically solid bold colours with liberal use of sequins and glitter. Tight fitting leather or satin trousers, jackets and tops were popular. Patterned fabrics were seldom used so as not to disrupt the brash “Andy Warhol” look.

The single most enduring fashion statement was the platform boot or shoe. These became the iconic image of the glam-era, reaching ever more outrageous heights. They were also the fashion items that found most appeal with the buying public. “Platforms” were in, irrespective of your musical persuasion.

By the end of 1975 the glamrock era had started to fade, giving way to early punk and new wave.

But some of the glam-era influence lives on today,  rediscovered by a new generation. The influence of David Bowie on Lady Gaga, one of her musical hero’s, is clear to see.

Glamrock tribute bands keep the music and spectacle alive today. Glambuster was formed to do just that and try to deliver powerful rock music and a stage show that recreates the real 70’s look and sound. It’s hard work and dedication like this that audiences appreciate and keep them coming back for more....we hope!

Glambuster

Not a glamrock tribute band but a band paying tribute to the glam-era through music, looks and sound. Based in the West Midlands, the band work hard to create a stage show that encompasses the full experience of glam-era. It’s fun, entertaining and engaging.

With comments like, “really convincing and such great entertainment” and “ we didn’t hesitate to rebook them”, you might think the glam-era never really went away....
